Unless stopped by Congress, in just a few short days Obamacare will start registering people across the country in exchanges for major implementation in January of 2014. This will change healthcare as we know it in the United States. Despite how good we’re told this will be for the country, politicians have received exemptions and specialized treatment, Labor unions have come out in recent days in great opposition to it and there have been key legislators in the Democratic Party that have warned of a ‘train wreck’. There’s a fight looming in Washington on something called a continuing resolution which is to provide funding for the federal government for weeks to come.
Joining Jim to discuss this issue was Rick Manning, the vice president of communications and public policy with Americans for Limited Government. They are a non-partisan organization that works with Congress and state legislatures to prevent the continued expansion of government.
According to Rick, Congress is supposed to be appropriating bills on the funding of various areas within government. The problem is, when the House does an appropriation, the Senate doesn’t deal with it. As we’re seeing right now, this has resulted in a disagreement as to how to fund the government.
He went on to explain that there’s only two bills that have to be passed by Congress. One is to fund the government which is the continuing resolution and the other involves doing something about the debt ceiling. This is why some want to defund the Obamacare law using the continuing resolution because this means Senator Harry Reid will have to deal with that.
Not long ago, Speaker John Boehner and the leaders in the House were in opposition to tying the defunding of Obamacare into the continuing resolution process. Now they have switched positions on the matter. It appears that they will pass a continuing resolution this week that will fund the government for 90 days while also defunding Obamacare.
Why the push to defund Obamacare? Rick believes Obamacare will create a shortage of doctors, some of the doctors that remain will be forced to provide abortion and other services against their conscience, doctors will be required to ask patients questions that have more to do with government intrusion than patient health and in order to reduce costs, Obamacare will force businesses to reduce the hours of full-time employees.
