“After several years of living and studying at the Thiksay Monastery, I had settled into a routine. Most of the time, I felt bored with reading and meditating, I longed for a different kind of mental stimulation. The stimulation I longed for was information outside of the Buddhist texts. I had access to a library of Buddhist writings filled with stories, chants, and mantras, but I didn’t have access to information about other religions. I didn’t know the difference between a Sunni and a Shia Muslim – although I had heard the Dalai Lama talk about them. There was so much about how the world worked that I didn’t know. I didn’t know how a car was put together, how airplanes were able to fly, or how rivers could flow to the sea but never run dry. Likewise, there were so many things around me that didn’t make sense, and there was a part of me that felt I was learning a lot about nothing at the monastery. I longed to know more.”
