Phyllis Schlafly is the founder and president of Eagle Forum. She is the author or editor of 20 books including “The Supremacists: The Tyranny of Judges and How to Stop It” and “No Higher Power: Obama’s War on Religious Freedom”.

According to Phyllis, Common Core Standards was signed off by the Organization of State Governors along with a state superintendent organization. Phyllis noted that they did not write the initiative but instead it was written by experts dictated by the Federal Department of Education. So Common Core Standards is basically the federal government stepping in to set some new standards and make everyone comply.

Remember “Outcome Based Education”, “School to Work” and “Values Clarification”? According to Phyllis, Common Core Standards is basically a revival of those ideas.

At this time all but 5 states have signed on to this initiative although Phyllis indicated that the states that signed on did so because that would allow them to obtain funding under the “Race to the Top” grant program.

Can the Common Core Standards initiative avoid the concern over teaching to the test as opposed to a broad curriculum overview? What about laws already in place that are supposed to prevent the implementation of a national curriculum in local schools? What are the data collection dangers? How will home schooling be affected? Get the answers when you review this edition of Crosstalk.
