Fast Facts: Hummingbirds – Part III

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope! I’m Carl Kerby.

What bird has feet, but cannot walk? That’s right – the hummingbird! If you think this is because of evolution and not perfect design, then you would be wrong, my friend.

God knew this mighty migrator would need strong chest and wing muscles as it migrates. Check out the rufous hummer which covers 4,000 miles from Mexico to Alaska bi-annually or the ruby throated hummer which covers the 600 miles of the Gulf of Mexico without stopping. Is it any wonder that, when it rests, it needs strong perching legs to settle on? While it is known that a hummingbird will store up half its body weight in fat as an energy source while flying, it is beyond our comprehension that a creature of such high metabolism and low weight can make such a long flight solo every year. Clearly, this is God’s handiwork.
