George Washington – December 23, 1783

It’s December 23, 1783. I’m at the Maryland State House where General George Washington is resigning his commission as Commander of the Continental Army. The general is speaking …

GW: “I leave the interests of our dearest country to the protection of Almighty God. And now, I retire to private life.”

There is hardly a member of Congress that is not crying, and I can see General Washington is fighting back tears also. Never before in the history of warfare has a victorious general given away his power in such a manner. In fact, King George the Third said, “If he doesn’t take over as king, he’ll be the greatest man in the world.”
