Kelly Shackelford is the President and CEO of Liberty Institute.

According to a complaint and suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas (Houston Division); a complaint filed against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Director of the Houston National Cemetery indicated that many grieving widows and families were being told that God cannot be mentioned.

The story begins with a Memorial Day service held by a veterans group. This year the pastor’s invocation was different because there was a call from the Veterans Administration to the pastor asking him to submit his prayer beforehand in writing. The VA proceeded to tell the pastor what he could and could not say in that prayer and that he could not pray in the name of Jesus. At that point he solicited the help of Liberty Institute.

Although the pastor was able to obtain a restraining order on behalf of the pastor in this case, it exposed a number of activities being allowed by our federal government that work in opposition to free religious expression. Find out what those are and how you can get involved when you review this edition of Crosstalk.
