This Crosstalk details the case of the Romeike family of Germany, a home schooling family seeking permanent asylum status in the U.S. and the implications this case may have on home schooling families throughout our nation.

The Romeike family went to German authorities to let them know of their desire to home school their children and the government came at them with the full force of the law via threats of fines and criminal prosecution. When the family persisted in the face of this persecution, a caravan of armed officers came to pick up the children and forcibly take them to the public schools.

Eventually the Romeike’s came to the U.S. on a regular tourist application but as soon as they arrived they applied for asylum. The first judge ruled in their favor but the Obama administration appealed that decision to a higher immigration board. That board agreed with the administration which led the H.S.L.D.A. to appeal this decision on behalf of the family. The case now resides with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the second highest court in the U.S.
