President Obama was summoned to appear before a Georgia court yesterday regarding his status to be eligible for the presidency.

To help bring some clarity to this on-going subject, this Crosstalk featured Dr. Herb Titus. Dr. Titus is a recognized expert on the Constitution. He has taught constitutional law, common law and other subjects for nearly 30 years at five different law schools. He served as the founding dean of the college of law and government at Regent University. He also served previously as a trial attorney and a special assistant United States attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. and Kansas City, Missouri. He is also the author of God, Man & Law: The Biblical Principle.

The qualifications necessary to become president of the U.S. include the requirement that a person must be a natural born citizen. The problem is, the phrase “natural born citizen” is not defined anywhere in our Constitution. So what we need to ask is, “Why would the president and only the president be held to this standard?”

According to Dr. Titus, it has to do with the oath of office. The president is the only person in the federal government who takes an oath that is contained in the Constitution itself. Oaths of other offices are provided by statute and ask support of the Constitution. On the other hand, the president swears to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. This makes him the chief constitutional officer in regard to the preservation, protection and defense of the Constitution. The founders, therefore, were looking for a person with a demonstrable, singular loyalty to the nation. That would be a person who from birth is a citizen of the U.S.

Join Jim as he has Dr. Titus reveal more about the history behind this requirement, the biblical support for it, why President Obama was subpoenaed to appear before a Georgia court and more.
