Fast Facts: Snapping Turtles – Part V

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope! I’m Carl Kerby.

As we eluded previously, we are examining the design-packed snapping turtle.

This air-breathing reptile has a secret weapon. While we only use our mouth and nose to inhale oxygen, that is not an option for underwater aquatic lovers like the turtle so God designed it with a cloaca… a unique, multitasking rear end opening.

Not only is this where the turtle uses the bathroom and lays its eggs, but it’s also where it breathes underwater! What?! How?! I’m glad you asked…

This area is packed with blood vessels and, as muscles force water in and out of the opening, these vessels soak up the oxygen like a sponge. This means the snapping turtle can stay under water longer and even hibernate without coming up for air.

Man, I wish I had time to tell you more, but I guess you’ll just have to join me for more Fast Facts. Until next time, stay bold!
