January 20: Jeremiah on Unheard Prayer

Thus saith the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the Lord doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins. Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not for this people for their good. When they fast, I will not hear their cry…

Jeremiah 14:10-12

As Robert Robinson wrote, “Prone to wander, Lord I fear it, Prone to leave the God I love.”

If you haven’t noticed by now, God is serious about sin. Take some time to browse these sins pointed out in the Bible and see if God is convicting you about any of these:

  • The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) – Idolatry, Blasphemy, Sabbath-breaking, Disobedience, Murder, Adultery, Theft, Lying, and Covetousness.
  • The Works of the Flesh (Galatians 5) – “Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings”
  • Put Off (Colossians 3:8) – “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”
  • Not inheritors (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) – “neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

In addition to the “lists” there are the individual sins – pornography, or trusting in riches, for example.

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Job 31:1

 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Job 31:24

Job 31 is a good review of the “disciplines of a godly patriarch.” Browse thru the lists and pray for God to reveal to you where you have sinned, but also to keep your heart tender to His conviction.
