August 23: Prayer in Song with Deborah

We’re on day 2 of singing in prayer – and we’re going to the Old Testament to learn how to sing with Deborah!

Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.

Judges 5:3

Not-so-macho Barak wouldn’t fight unless a woman was on his side (Judges 4:8). His small force wiped out 900 iron chariots (Judges 4:13). Deborah and Barak won an incredible victory – so complete that their enemy Sisera had his head nailed thru by his buddy’s wife (Judges 4:21).

But who received the glory in the song?

[4] LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.
[5] The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.

Judges 5:4-5

The LORD God was greater than Sisera’s chariots, but He is also greater than nature!

[8] They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

Judges 5:8

The people were in bondage – spiritually and politically. They forsake the God of Israel and their military strength was negligible.

[11] They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.

Judges 5:11

The people will praise the Lord for delivering them from danger – because the LORD is righteous. What do we mean righteous?

2. Applied to God, the perfection or holiness of his nature; exact rectitude; faithfulness.

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see:
all I have needed thy hand hath provided–
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
